Marine Fishes
TWO TYPES OF MARINE FISHES

Bony Fish

Characteristics: Have a skeleton made of bone, gills for breathing, and scales covering their bodies. Examples: Australian lungfish and Acipenser oxyrinchus.

Australian Lungfish

The Australian lungfish (Neoceratodus forsteri), also known as the Queensland lungfish, Burnett salmon and barramunda, is the only surviving member of the family Neoceratodontidae. It is one of only six extant lungfish species in the world. Endemic to Australia, the Neoceratodontidae are an ancient family belonging to the class Sarcopterygii, or lobe-finned fishes.

Acipenser oxyrinchus

This species is recorded to be near threatened and at risk of becoming an endangered species due to dam construction, dredging, dredge spoil disposal, groundwater extraction, irrigation, flow alterations, and other surface water withdrawals. They can be found in temperate and subtropical climates and in marine or freshwater environments.

Cartilaginous Fish

Characteristics:Have a skeleton made of cartilage rather than bone, and typically have rough skin.
Examples: Elasmobranchii and Holocephali
